In order to make the leap to SIP Trunking you need to know what you’re getting yourself into, what you’re looking to get out of it, and if your business is ready to take the plunge into the wonderful world of VoIP! Switching to IP telephony is quickly becoming a global trend, but is it right for you?  Here we have provided a quick and easy SIP trunk checklist of questions and information needed to help guide your decision making process for switching to SIP :

  • Examine your phone system. 
    • Is your PBX in need of an upgrade?
    • What are your calling patterns?
    • Analyze your current bill.
    • Is your equipment SIP ready?
  • Establish your needs.

    • How much bandwidth do you need?
    • Will you get Internet service and SIP from the same SIP trunking provider?
    • What is your budget?
    • Has quality been a problem in the past? Are you looking for a reliable connection?
    • Is redundancy and having a fail-over plan essential to your business?
    • Will you need to “port” your DIDs (phone numbers)?
    • Do you need to support remote users?
    • What call features do you use and need? (auto attendant, voicemail, etc)
    • Are you looking to switch all of your lines to SIP? (fax-over-SIP is unreliable and alarm systems & credit card machines still need a POTs line?
  • Evaluate SIP Trunk providers.
    • Do they have QoS?
    • Do they offer support? If so, is it 9-5 or 24/7? And how convenient is it to reach them?
    • Are they certified to support your selected PBX platform?
    • Are they able to offer a free SIP trunk demonstration or free SIP trial?
    • Can they “port” your numbers?
    • What are their installation fees?
    • Do they provide all of the calling features you have determined you need in a phone system?
